USS Midway

A visit to the USS Midway Museum should definitely be on your list of things to see in San Diego. You can explore a floating city at sea aboard the longest serving naval vessel of the 20th century (over 47 years).  After the USS Midway was decommissioned, they renovated it and turned it into a fascinating, floating museum. There is something for every age aboard the USS Midway Museum.

Playing with the JetsThe admission price includes many extras, in addition to viewing the interesting exhibits and aircraft.  We especially enjoyed the self-guided audio tour that walks you through the exhibits and goes into detail about the 25 aircraft onboard. The audio tour allowed us to pause and take our time with the tour. We also enjoyed the free tour to the “Island”. The Island is the superstructure above the flight deck, and is led by a docent. Our docent tour leader served aboard the USS Midway and had some interesting stories to tell.

The kids really enjoyed the hands-on exhibits, flight simulator, and climbing aboard some of the aircraft. They also liked seeing the living quarters and learning about what it would be like to live aboard an aircraft carrier. It was fascinating to find out how huge the ship is and to see what it takes to make a “city at sea” like the USS Midway run efficiently!Plane on Deck

We did not have a stroller or wheelchair with us, but according to the personnel, the USS Midway is handicap accessible.  There are elevators and a family wheelchair accessible restroom. They told us that the majority of exhibits are accessible, but if you are unable to get to all of them, there is a continuous movie that gives an overview of the exhibits.

USS Midway1The USS Midway also has standard amenities for tourists. They have a really nice gift shop, with pretty much anything you can imagine.  There is also a cafe that serves snacks, meals, and drinks. We enjoyed sitting outside and eating, while overlooking San Diego, from high up on the hangar deck!

The USS Midway Museum is easy to find if you are in the downtown San Diego area. You can’t miss the huge aircraft carrier that is permanently docked on Harbor Drive! There is plenty of parking nearby, or within walking distance.USS Midway2
